Callie
After deciding to go out, Callie moved quickly. She wanted to go to her favorite bar in Knightdale. It was low key, but she wanted to look good, so after showering, she pulled on a short jean skirt, a thin tank top that hugged her curves, and some wedges.
She checked herself in the mirror and was pleased with what she saw. She definitely looked ready to face the people at the bar. Besides, if she looked good, that meant she had to feel good, right?
With a nod to her reflection, she grabbed her purse and was on her way. One perk to living in Somerville was its proximity to Raleigh and the suburbs outside it. It meant she could work in downtown Raleigh at the law firm, but own her own house in a small, sleepy town outside it without fear of living paycheck to paycheck. It was a win-win in her mind.
On the drive to The End Zone, she cranked the music and sang along with her windows rolled down, not caring that her hair would be a ratâs nest by the time she arrived. She needed to let loose and have fun, not think about the situation with Derek or anyone else. If thoughts of Derek crept in, she just turned her music louder to drown the thoughts out.
After parking, she made her way inside and smiled widely as she took the bar in. Nothing had changed, not even the drunk that sat to the left of the bar, slumped over because heâd already had too much.
âCallie!â Pete, the bartender, called out. âI havenât seen you in a coonâs age!â
Callie grinned and walked over to where he was, leaning over the gleaming wooden surface of the bar to hug him tightly. âIâve been busy helping Emma with her wedding.â
Pete nodded. âI remember you saying she was getting married soon. Your regular?â
Callie answered as she hopped up on a stool. âYou know it.â
She and Pete chatted for a few minutes while he mixed her gin and tonic and poured her two shots. She smiled her thanks as she threw her shots back in quick succession. When she slammed them back onto the bar top, she met Peteâs surprised eyes.
âYou okay?â he asked, looking away and grabbing a rag to dry some glasses before putting them away.
âYeah, why?â she asked, sipping her drink.
He shrugged and concentrated on what he was doing. âYou donât normally drink them so fast.â
âNothing wrong with that, is there?â she asked defensively. She didnât want another person judging her for things sheâd been doing.
âNope, not a thing. You got a ride home?â
âIâll find my way home. Donât worry about me.â
Pete shook his head and walked off to help a group that had just walked up to the bar. Since he was occupied serving them, she spun around on her stool and leaned back on the bar, sipping her drink as she looked the place over.
It really hadnât changed any. The End Zone was the place to be during football seasonâcollege or professional.
